The Brits seem to be winning everything in sport at moment – the Lions knocked defeated the Wallabies last weekend, Andy Murray claimed Wimbledon and Chris Froome is leading the Tour de France. Thankfully the long-awaited Ashes series has begun, so the Aussies will be hoping they can restore some national pride and put the Poms in their place at the same time! We’ll be featuring the cricket throughout the weekend at SSC but as always there will be plenty of other sport on too.
Friday night will feature the rugby league match-up between the Broncos and Sharks, where both sides desperately need to win to keep touch with the top-eight. Brisbane are traditionally very strong at home but have been in appalling form of late, while the Sharks have struggled for consistency throughout the year. While both sides will be missing a host of Origin stars we still expect an entertaining affair and there’s sure to be a lot of points scored.
Saturday will see the return of Super 15 Rugby and State of Origin will be coming early when the Waratahs host the Reds at ANZ Stadium. The Reds will be buoyed by the news that Head Coach Ewen McKenzie is set to take charge of the Wallabies come the end of the season, while NSW will be hoping to give their home fans something to cheer about. Both sides will be missing a few of their Wallaby stars in the aftermath of the Lions tour but there is never any love lost between these two sides.
Sunday night will be a case of who can fly higher when the Adelaide Thunderbirds take on the Queensland Firebirds in the grand final of the ANZ Netball Championship. The two sides have been the most consistent performers throughout the regular season, with only three goals separating the sides all year. Both teams have match winners across the court so it will be interesting to see who soars to the title in this one.
As mentioned we will also be featuring all the action of the Ashes cricket and Tour de France cycling throughout the weekend. While the First Test looks like it may not go the distance with fourteen wickets falling on the first day, hopefully the Aussies can get it done! New coach Darren Lehmann at least looks to have restored some calmness to the Aussie set-up.
Meanwhile the Tour has been anything but, with numerous crashes marring several stages of this year’s event. Hopefully the Aussie GreenEdge cycling team can continue to have an impact and hopefully claim another stage victory.
