There’s another huge serving of sport on this weekend, with a smorgasbord of options to fill your live action appetite. We’ll have everything from the Wimbledon finals to the weekend’s rugby league. The deciding Lions Test will be a must-see and we’ll have all the picturesque scenes from the Tour de France. As always we’re here to help you digest it all, so here’s a look at what we have on our menu.
Friday night, the Sharks will be hoping to circle the Tigers in order to maintain their spot in the top-eight. However Wests Tigers have shown plenty of fight the past few weeks and have really turned their season around. They’ll be hoping speculation about the future of star playmaker Benji Marshall doesn’t act as a distraction and they can make it five wins from their last six outings.
In the evening’s second match Melbourne will host Brisbane, with both sides struggling with injuries and poor form. Between them the usual powerhouses of the competition have only registered four wins from their last ten games. With both sides boasting a host of Maroons they’ll be hoping to turn things around ahead of the Origin decider.
Saturday night will be a huge night in Sydney for rugby union fans as the Wallabies take on the British & Irish Lions in the deciding Test down the road at a sold-out ANZ Stadium. The series has been tighter than anyone could have possibly predicted, with the first two Tests being decided by a kick at goal after full-time.
The Wallabies will be hoping to take the ascendency they built in last week’s match into this defining game – and we’re predicting George Smith may just be the man to help get them over the line. The Wallaby veteran returns to the side nearly four years after his last cap and he is the only remaining player of Australia’s triumph over the Lions on home soil back in 2001.
Later that night we’ll have a new women’s grand slam champion when Marion Bartoli and Sabine Lisicki contest the Wimbledon final. They had contrasting matches in their respective semi-finals with Frenchwoman Bartoli cruising through in straight-sets, while the German Lisicki was pushed all the way, finally prevailing 9-7 in the third set.
On Sunday night we’re hoping to see an eagerly anticipated contest between the two top Men’s seeds in Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. The Brits are desperate for another Wimbledon champion and will be behind their man Murray. However Djokovic has been in ominous grass court form whereas the other top seeds have struggled to make an impact at this year’s event. Of course there’s still a lot of tennis to be played before then with the Men’s semi-finals taking place tonight.
If all that wasn’t enough we’ll also be featuring all the late night cycling action from the Tour de France. The Australian Orica GreenEdge team have been making a huge impact on the 100th edition of the pinnacle in road cycling. While they were in the headlines for the wrong reasons when their team bus got stuck at the finish at the start of the first stage, they bounced back to claim the yellow jersey when they won the team time trial. Aussie Simon Gerrans had been wearing the maillot jaune as leader of the general classification, which has now passed to his teammate Daryl Impey.
