This weekend at SSC

It’s been a great week in sport for Australia, with our Davis Cup team winning through to a World Group play-off and Adam Scott taking out the US Masters in a play-off of his own. The sport rolls on this weekend with a huge set of fixtures across all codes. Here’s our weekly look around the grounds to let you know what’s on.

Friday night will be punctuated by the traditional ANZAC Test between the Kangaroos and Kiwis. With all NRL clubs having a bye due to representative matches this weekend, all eyes will be on tonight’s Test being staged in Canberra for the first time.

While the Aussies are near full-strength and will go in as overwhelming favourites, the New Zealanders can’t be underestimated despite missing a couple of key players in this one-off contest. Trans-Tasman pride seems to always bring out the best in rugby league’s elite players and we’re sure this match will be no different.

Saturday night will feature the other kind of rugby when the Reds and Brumbies clash in the Super 15. This is a huge match, as it not only pits together the best two performing teams in the Australian conference but will feature a number of players keen to press for Wallaby selection ahead of the Lions Tour later in the year.

The Brumbies are currently leading the competition but can be leap-frogged by the Reds if they win at home. While the boys from the ACT have only lost once this year, the Queenslanders will go into the match high on confidence after a bonus-point win over 2012 champions the Chiefs in New Zealand last weekend.

Later in the evening we’ll switch to round ball coverage when we cross to England for the latest round of fixtures in the Premier League. There are a host of matches we’ll have available on viewers’ choice, with teams desperate for points to either avoid relegation or push for a coveted place in Europe as the season nears its conclusion.

Sunday will see the football spotlight shine on the pinnacle of our domestic competition, when the A-League Grand Final kicks-off in the afternoon. The match will appropriately be contested by the two best teams this season when the Wanderers play the Mariners at a sold-out Allianz Stadium.

It will be a remarkable achievement for whoever wins the title, in what has arguably been the best year of competition in A-League history. The Wanderers will be hoping they can continue their 13-match unbeaten streak and cap their fairy-tale run by lifting the trophy in their debut season. Meanwhile the Mariners are contesting their fourth grand final on the back of four straight wins and are also hoping to claim their maiden title.

If you’re up for something a bit more active this weekend, our tennis members are again invited to participate in our annual social day with Pratten Park Tennis. The day is being hosted by our friends at Pratten Park on Saturday from 12pm-5pm. Please contact our Facility Manager Steve Crass on 0408024148 if you would like to participate in what is always a fun day.

Whatever you’re up to this weekend we hope you have an enjoyable time and as always look forward to sharing some sport with you at some stage!
