The Weekend at SSC

We’ll be chasing winter out the door this weekend at Strathfield Sports Club so there’ll be plenty of room for you to come in and enjoy all the sporting action of the next few days. Have a read of our weekly wrap to ensure you don’t miss a beat as we drum up support for what we’ll be screening.

September is nearly upon us, which means the smell of footy finals is in the air. With just two rounds to go in the NRL there are still numerous teams in contention for the top-eight. Friday night Souths will tackle lowly Wests Tigers as they strive for a top-eight finish. Meanwhile the Broncos and Knights will be locked in a must-win game to keep their seasons alive.

There are some huge clashes on Saturday with the Raiders and Warriors both in the similar position of needing to win and have results go their way. While the Sea Eagles and Storm will be looking to continue their recent good run of form into the finals. The Sharks versus the Cowboys the following afternoon is another intriguing fixture, with both sides belying recent controversy to give themselves a chance of finishing in the eight.

On Saturday night we’ll kick-off matchday three in the EPL, where new boys Hull City will be hoping they can also spring an upset on the expensively assembled Manchester City, after the Sky Blues lost to Cardiff last weekend. The Welsh side will be hoping they can back up their shock result when they host Everton, who are searching for their first league win of the new season. The biggest match of the round will be on Sunday evening when Liverpool host Manchester United in what is one of the fiercest rivalries in English football.

Elsewhere this weekend the Aussies will be looking to exact more Ashes revenge when they take on England in the second Twenty20 on Sunday afternoon. Aaron Finch smashed a world record 156 off just 63 balls, to deliver the Aussies a crushing win in the first game. He’ll be looking to repeat the dose after an innings in which he brought up his 50, 100 and 150 all with sixes!

We’ll also have all the action from the US Open throughout the weekend, as the world’s best players bring their power games to the year’s final grand slam at Flushing Meadows. It hasn’t been a good tournament for the Aussies to date, with Lleyton Hewitt the only survivor in the singles draw but there’s sure to be many familiar faces as we bring you the best matches of the New York event.

As always we’re predicting another fine weekend of sporting action at SSC. So make sure you pay us a visit if you’re out and about as we welcome spring like an old friend.
