Current tennis initiatives at SSC

Read on to find out about our recent tennis results and some of the exciting opportunities on the horizon at Strathfield Sports Club as our tennis program continues to cater for the wide-ranging talents of our members in 2016.

We recently completed the first edition of a new mid-week round robin competition that featured two divisions to help level the playing field.

Mrigesh Tamang took out the Div.1 bracket, claiming a tight three sets win over Steve Chen. With the tie level at one set each Mrigesh claimed the decider 6-3 in what was a great example of the social competition we like to encourage at SSC.

The Div.2 final also looked set to go down to the wire with Shanta Prajapati winning the first set in a hotly contested tie break. Unfortunately he was forced to retire midway through the second set handing victory to Robert Moh, who was up a break at the time.

All players are to be congratulated on the spirit in which matches were played and in a sign of the success of the event, the second edition (starting soon) is set to have an influx of new participants.

We’ve also recently completed our Thursday night Summer Doubles Competition with the team of Louie Zamora, Nick Maras and Stuart Robinson finishing on top ahead of Imad Indari, Kyri Kyiades and Shaun Max.

Also just around the corner is this year’s Autumn Badge competition, with the club expecting to field six teams across the Men’s and Mixed divisions.

Another exciting development for the club this season is that we will be entering a team in the Sydney Premier League competition.

News of the great camaraderie at our club has seen some of Sydney’s best players join our ranks as they prepare to make their debut for the club when play gets under way in July.

Led by captain John Field the team features players with previous rankings on the ATP Tour and ITF World Senior Men’s Tour, who are currently in the top 300 on the AMT rankings.

Some of the other new faces you can expect to see representing the club are:

  • Greg Evans (ranked No.1 in 35 years doubles in 2012 by ITF World Senior Men’s circuit).
  • Michael Evans (ranked No.2 in 35 years doubles in 2012 by ITF World Senior Men’s circuit).
  • Nat Maraga (ranked 1422 in singles and 1291 in doubles on ATP Tour in 2010).
  • James O’Brien (ranked 1592 in singles on the ATP Tour in 2008).
  • Glenn Knox (ranked 591 in singles and 734 in doubles on ATP Tour in 1999).
  • Pat Staunton (won the 40 years singles at the World Masters Games in 2009).
  • Tim White (one of the best doubles players in Sydney and a Level 2 TPA tennis coach).

It’s set to ensure we’ll have some of the best quality tennis the club has seen in a long time on our courts and we’re proud to have SSC represented in this prestigious competition.

As always if you’d like more information on how you can get involved in the various tennis competitions taking place at SSC or to simply make a social booking please contact the club.
