The international tennis tour is on a hiatus but you can get a serve of competition this weekend at Strathfield Sports Club’s Tennis Championships for 2012.

Club tennis members have been invited to enter in a variety of divisions, with late registrations still being accepted up until 4pm this Friday 7th November.

While the warm weather is expected to spark the competitive streak in our members, Head Coach Alex Debelja says this weekend’s fixtures are more about participation and promoting the values of the Club.

“The Club Championships provide an opportunity for tennis members to play in a tournament style competition in a social environment they are familiar with,” he said.

In saying that, Alex is looking forward to a number of competitive match-ups across all divisions. Those being: U/15; U/18; Opens & Vets, male and female, singles and doubles.

Coach Debelja, who will act as tournament director this weekend, expects Daniel Zhang and Oliver Lavermicocca to battle it out for the Boys U/15 singles title. Meanwhile Dylan Clee and Patrick Shen are expected to feature strongly in the U/18 division.

Strathfield Sports’ Ethan Tulliani will surely be hard to beat in the Men’s Open Singles, on the back of his international experience this year.  He will team up with Badge captain Mark Padd in the doubles and a potential match-up against Michael Villarruel and Alex Chen shapes up as being one of the highlights of the weekend.

In the Veterans division, Coach Shaun Max expects Bob Bow and Daryl Hart to be very hard to beat in the Doubles, given their experience and combination.

On the women’s side of the draw, hot on the heels of Sam Stosur winning her third successive Newcombe Medal, Strathfield Sports will be looking to the new generation of women’s tennis coming through Meriden to feature prominently in the Junior and Open divisions.

The format for the weekend will be best-of-three sets, with the third set going to a super-breaker (10 points lead by 2) if required.

Singles action will commence from 9am Saturday, with the Doubles getting underway from 1:30pm. All finals are scheduled to take place on Sunday.

With registrations still being accepted and only $5 per event, there is no better time to test yourself against your fellow members. As an added incentive, all winners and runner-ups will receive a gift voucher to use in the Club’s pro-shop.

All events will be run subject to participation, so to all our tennis members we extend a final invitation to get involved to help ensure SSC really is the place to be this weekend!
