Stosur slams her way into French Open quarters

Aussie tennis star Sam Stosur has charged into the quarter-finals of the French Open after claiming a straight sets win over sixth seed Simona Halep.

In a match that spawned three days due to ongoing rain delays at Roland Garros, Stosur wound back the clock with a convincing 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 result over the Romanian.

The Queenslander hit 29 winners and only 22 unforced errors in coming back from 3-5 down in the first set, winning ten of the next 14 games to claim victory.

Having been beaten in 2010 final, Stosur will now play unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the last eight, who accounted for Agnieszka Radwanska in her fourth round clash.

It is the fourth time Stosur has reached the quarter-finals at the French Open from 13 appearances, having last progressed to the second week of the grand slam back in 2012.

And Stosur will go into the clash confident of progressing further in the draw given her 4-1 career record against Pironkova.

“I know certain things that are going to work very well against her,” Stosur said post-match.

“(But) she’s made quarters of a grand slam before and had big wins in her career.

“You can’t take anything lightly (although) it looks like a good match-up.

“Playing a confident player in the quarters of a slam is never easy no matter what your record is.”

The winner of the clash will play either world 108 Shelby Rogers or fourth-seed Garbine Muguruza in the semi-finals, with world no.1 Serena Williams looming as a likely final opponent.
