Kyrgios splits from coach

Australia’s rising tennis starlet Nick Kyrgios has split from his Kiwi coach Simon Rea, just two weeks after his scintillating run at Wimbledon stunned the tennis world.

The big-serving 19-year-old saved a record nine match points in his second round five set epic against Richard Gasquet, before his remarkable win over Spanish legend Rafael Nadal to reach the quarter-finals.

Kyrgios made the announcement on his website that he was transitioning to two Aussie coaches – Josh Eagle and Todd Larkham so that he could spend more time in his hometown of Canberra.

There is no animosity associated with the move, with the decision already being made prior to his break-out performances at the All England Club.

“My deepest thanks go to Simon Rea who has been nothing but a steady, calm and positive influence on me,” Kyrgios said in his statement.

“My time with Simon was an incredibly special time for us both and I learned and achieved a lot thanks to Simon and I will be forever grateful for his input and drive to improve my game.

“We both knew going in to Wimbledon that it would be our last event working together and in some ways, to sign off with a quarterfinal appearance was a special reward and a fitting end.

“Not only is Simon a great coach but he is a great person and I wish him all the best in the next phase of his coaching career.”

Kyrgios had worked with Rea, who is based in Melbourne, since winning the Australian Open junior title in January last year.

The 19-year-old’s performance on his Wimbledon debut broke all sorts of records, including becoming the first wildcard to reach the men’s Round of 16 since 2009.

Kyrgios’ ranking has risen to a career high No. 66, becoming the first teenager inside the world’s top-100 since another Aussie, Bernard Tomic, achieved the feat back in 2011.
