Hewitt comes out of retirement

Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt will come out of retirement for a second time, with the 35-year-old set to contest the men’s doubles at this year’s Wimbledon.

Hewitt has been granted a wild card entry by the All England Club and will partner rising star Jordan Thompson when play gets under way later this month.

Wimbledon holds special memories for Australia’s Davis Cup captain, who won his second Grand Slam title at the historic venue in 2002.

Having farewelled the men’s tour at this year’s Australian Open, Hewitt first came out of retirement to help his team in the doubles rubber of their World Group clash against the US in March.

Hewitt and John Peers pushed the world’s top doubles pairing, the Byron brothers, to five sets but ultimately went down, handing victory in the tie to the Americans.

There was good news on the singles front for the Aussie men in this week’s latest rankings with Bernard Tomic edging back into the world’s top 20 players.

Following last week’s run to the semi-finals at Queens Tomic has jumped three places to no.19, just one behind compatriot Nick Kyrgios who also moved up a spot.

In women’s tennis news, Australia will play away to the Ukraine in the first round of next year’s Fed Cup following Monday’s draw.

The World Group II tie will be held on the 11-12 February, 2017, with the Aussies dropping back to the competition’s second tier after also being beaten by the US this year.

Should Australia beat Ukraine, it would advance to a World Group Play-off tie for a shot at returning to the elite eight-nation group in 2018.
