Great weekend for Sydney in the Hyundai A-League

The two Sydney teams competing in the Hyundai A-League Australian soccer competition both racked up big victories this weekend (December 9) to potentially kick-start their seasons into gear.

The biggest upset of round 11 came across the ditch in New Zealand, where Sydney FC battled their way to a 1-2 victory against the Wellington Phoenix.

For Sydney – who are currently at the bottom of the A-League points table – the victory is a particularly important one as it brings to an end a horrible five game winless streak.

Sebastian Ryall opened the scoring for the Sky Blues in the first half by breaking through the Phoenix's defensive line to head home a Jason Culina cross from the corner.

Sydney FC scored again deep into the game when an excellent pass from Terry McFlynn allowed Rhyan Grant to go one on one with goalkeeper Mark Paston, where the prodigious young midfielder made no mistake.

But the drama wasn't over yet as a handball from McFlynn inside the box in the 84th minute saw him sent to the bin and Sydney reduced to just ten men.

Battling hard to secure the victory, Sydney's Adam Griffiths gave up a penalty in the first minute of injury time which Jeremy Brockie turned into the Phoenix's first goal of the match.

Luckily for the Sky Blues however, a desperate charge from Wellington with the clock ticking down was held off and eventually the whistle blew to give Sydney their third win of the season.

Meanwhile the Western Sydney Wanderers managed to pull off an equally important victory against the ninth ranked Brisbane Roar FC to move into fourth in the A-League standings.

Fans in attendance at Parramatta Stadium were treated to a dramatic finale as Shinji Ono scored the only goal of the match from a penalty in the 87th minute.

The Roar fought back hard with multiple close attempts on goal, but in the end the Wanderers, like their cross town rivals, were able to hold out for the victory.
