Aussies roll on at Roland Garros

The Aussie contingent at this year’s French Open have made a promising start in Paris with six out of ten players victorious on the opening day.

Seeded starts Nick Kyrgios, Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic won with relative ease, while emerging talents Daria Gavrilova, Ajla Tomljanovic and Thanasi Kokkinakis also progressed to the second round.

The news was not as positive for Casey Dellacqua, who lost to Tomljanovic, Sam Groth, Marinko Matosevic and Jarmila Gajdosova who bowed out after their opening encounter.

Kyrgios has since progressed straight to the third round after Britain’s Kyle Edmund withdrew from their scheduled match-up with strained stomach muscles.

Australia’s other two remaining players in the men’s draw, Tomic and Kokkinakis will go head-to-head on Thursday night, with a likely meeting with world No.1 Novak Djokovic likely awaiting the winner.

Tomic has twice faced Kokkinakis this year, winning on both occasions, but is conscious the Adelaide teenager is ever improving.

“He got into the top 100 now, so that’s very good confidence for him,” Tomic said.

“He prefers clay. It’s going to be another tough match.”

Kokkinakis is bullish about his chances of toppling his Davis Cup teammate on clay, realising victory will deliver a probable shot at Djokovic.

“I think he (Tomic) knows I’m not far off with him and I know I’m not far off, so I guess I can take that confidence going into the next match,” he said.

“Love to get a crack at Novak, but Bernie is a tough task.”

On the women’s draw Sam Stosur is preparing to take on defending champion Maria Sharapova in what promises to be another epic match-up.

The news was not as good for Daria Gavrilova who was forced to withdraw from her second round clash after tearing an abdominal muscle.
