Sydney FC struggle while the Wanderers find momentum

It's been a week of contrasts for the two Sydney teams competing in the Hyundai A-League, with one registering an important win to build momentum towards the back of the season while the other continues to flounder at the bottom of the table.

The Western Sydney Wanderers are now sitting in fifth place on the rankings with three wins, one draw and three losses, having beaten the Perth Glory 1-0 at nib Stadium on Sunday (November 18).

It was a hard fought contest between two closely matched sides, but in the end Italian import Iacopo La Rocca made the difference for West Sydney with a crucial goal in the 16th minute.

For more than an hour the Wanderers defended with heart and courage, holding out the Perth attack even after being reduced to ten men following a red card on Youssouf Hersi just before half time.

The win will be seen as an important one for West Sydney as it comes just a week after a heart breaking loss to the Newcastle Jets in Newcastle.

Their next challenge will be taking on the sixth ranked Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday (November 24), and everyone here at Strathfield Sports Club Sydney will be watching closely to see if they can carry on their winning ways.

Meanwhile Sydney FC's disastrous 2012/13 season has continued with a 4-2 loss to the Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday (November 16).

Superstar Italian import Alessandro Del Piero did his best to turn things around for the club, scoring two brilliant goals to keep his side in the match, but leaky defence cost the Sky Blues in the end.

Things aren't likely to get any easier for Sydney FC either, as they next take on the top of the table Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium on Friday (November 23).

Adelaide has won five of their seven games this season and have only lost once, to the Melbourne Victory in round three. Still, we'll be rooting for Sydney with the kind of passion that soccer fans are known for, so hopefully they can pull something out of the bag and upset the big guns.
